LITTLE LAMBS, BIG HOPE - MARY NYAKKIAGO

Martha Nyakiago was born on 22nd April 2021 to Joshua Karega and Rose Nyaguthii. She is the firstborn of two children and was born in Mai Mahiu, Nakuru County.

Neither of Martha’s parents had a permanent source of income. Joshua mostly worked for wages at construction sites, while Rose earned money through laundry and farm jobs. However, very little of Joshua’s income ever made it to the home. Joshua struggled with alcoholism and would spend his earnings on drinking while still expecting Rose to provide food, pay the rent, and take care of the other household expenses.

When Martha’s younger sister was born, the situation at home became unbearable. One day, Rose left the homestead with the newborn and left Martha with her father. She never returned.

Because of his alcoholism, there was no way Joshua could care for Martha. He therefore took her to his mother, Martha’s grandmother, in Maingi, a village near Little Lambs Kijabe. Martha was named after her grandmother, so they are both called Martha.

Joshua left Martha with her grandmother, promising to provide financial support, and returned to Mai Mahiu. He never came back and never provided any support.

It became her grandmother’s responsibility to provide for Martha and her cousins, who had also been left in her care. With the little income she had, it was impossible for her to afford Martha’s school fees, and Martha was approaching school-going age.

Because she lived in Maingi, her grandmother knew about Little Lambs. She visited the center toward the end of 2024 to ask if we could help Martha.

After the verification process was completed, Martha qualified and joined Little Lambs in January 2025. She is currently in PP2 and is enjoying every moment of being a Little Lamb.

Martha is a bright girl who does very well in class and is very creative. She is also confident and respectful.
